Playboy radio transistor1/23/2024 ![]() ![]() Each was striking in its own way: the famous Camel sign with its smoker puffing out perfect smoke rings Pepsi Cola's showpiece with its hundreds of thousands of lights and Admiral TV's news flashes, to name a few. First Totsuko studied Morita's home movies of the neon lights and billboards of Broadway. It was a place that everyone in the country knew about. Sukiyabashi Bridge, made famous overnight by a radio serial, was still in existence. It was a shabby building, but a great location. While they were making inquiries here and there, they learned from one of their advertising agencies that they could rent space on the Sukiyabashi corner (where the Sony Building now stands). And if they were going to invest in a neon sign, it had better be in a prominent place. Ibuka and the management were constantly aware of the need to make their name better known-in short, to advertise. This site was especially significant as it marked the hub of Tokyo's upscale Ginza district.įrom 1955, when Totsuko first began using the Sony name, brand recognition had been slowly gaining ground. The end of 1957 witnessed another event that boosted the visibility of the Totsuko brand name: a Sony neon sign in Sukiyabashi. ![]() Moreover, Totsuko was confident that it could achieve this. Totsuko took the bull by the horns and risked using its own brand name because it wanted to make Sony products known and admired around the world. On other goods, the label "Made in Japan" termed synonymous with cheap junk. In those days, the only Japanese products accepted in their own right as high-quality items were Nikon and Canon cameras. Most Japanese radio manufacturers at that time sold their products in the US under an American maker's brand name. This was something Morita had always insisted on, and it was to prove extremely significant. The agreement with Agrod naturally called for use of the Sony trademark. to serve as agent for several Totsuko products including a couple of Sony radios known as the "Baby-corder," and the "Transear." This steady expansion into the export market owed a great deal to Morita's August 1957 trip to the US, when he concluded a long-term agreement with Agrod Co. The November 16 Asahi Shimbun carried the following report: It was such a success that regular shipments could not keep up with year's-end demand, and a JAL plane had to be chartered to air-freight a large consignment. One other unforgettable aspect of the TR-63 was that it was the first transistor radio model to be exported. So intense was popular interest in the new pocketable radio that 50 of them were issued as "the first TR-63 off the line." Logically, of course, there can only be one "first off the line," but because Totsuko's fans were so enthusiastic to own "the first off the line" 50 of them ended up being supplied. He had shirts custom-made for his salesmen featuring a slightly larger pocket. The catch phrase would have lost its punch - except for a little ruse on Morita's part. Unfortunately though, the TR-63 was just barely larger than the pocket on a typical businessman's dress shirt. We now use it without a second thought, but who would ever guess that it originated as a Japanese-English term invented by Totsuko when it launched the TR-63? Today the word "pocketable" appears in English dictionaries. It seems that when the TR-63 came out, radios small enough to be slipped into a pocket were known in the US as "pocket" radios. The selling price of 13,800 yen equalled the monthly paycheck of the avarage Japanese salary earner. The TR-63 also consumed less than half the power. Compared to the 127x76x33mm dimensions of the TR-1 and its four transistors, the TR-63 measured 112x71x32mm and used six transistors for better recetion and output. It measured up favorably against the Regency TR-1 model, which had beaten Totsuko's transistor radio to become the world's first and, until the TR-63, had been the world's smallest. This was to be the world's smallest transistor radio, the TR-63 pocketable radio. Totsuko had another revolutionary product concept up its sleeve, one that would surely capture the public's imagination. ![]() As a result, Totsuko received orders through NHK from 200 schools all over the country. The TR-81, brought out at the end of 1956, was chosen by NHK for use by schools in remote areas. Around this time, Totsuko added a number of new models to its range of transistor radios. ![]()

Lazarus store in columbus ohio1/23/2024 ![]() ![]() He later became counsel to Germany during Cleveland’s administrations. This gown belonged to Henrietta Hammon Falkenbach, whose husband Joseph was Franklin County Treasurer in 1866-7. To represent the custom made apparel from this era, several tailor’s and dressmaker’s garments are featured in the exhibition, including a beautiful rust colored, watered silk dress from the 1860s. In fact, Lazarus did not offer women’s clothing in its store until 1909. Several of Columbus’ major department stores of the 20th century, such as Lazarus, The Union, and Morehouse-Martens, started out as either men’s clothiers or dry goods merchants. They purchased many of their supplies from dry goods merchants such as W. Prior to the middle of the 19th century, clothing production was predominantly custom made by tailors or dressmakers. From its early years as a men’s clothier in a 20 x 40 foot room, to its rise by 1965 as a member of the largest Department Store Chain, Federated, Lazarus’ growth reflects that of the capital city from small beginnings through a “golden age” of downtown development and eventual branching out into the surrounding countryside. The dates covered by the exhibition, 1851-1965, parallel the history of the F&R Lazarus Co. Capital Fashion 1851-1965, the new exhibition at the College of Human Ecology, The Ohio State University, explores the fashion industry in Ohio’s capital city during the middle 100 years of Ohio’s bicentennial. Between 18, the F&R Lazarus Company retail store dominated the trade and physical landscape of Columbus. ![]()

Things to do in dallas1/23/2024 ![]() Relax at Klyde Warren Parkīooks are available to read in Klyde Warren Park It’s hard to go wrong with the choices in Lower Greenville. Another family favorite is Terilli’s where you can try their Italchos (Italian nachos, of course) and a martini by the piano in the bar or by the fireplace on the roof. We love settling in for a cocktail on the rooftop terrace of HG Sply Co., which has great views of downtown. We love it because there are lots of places to choose from and because it’s fun without being too crazy. Once one of the grittier neighborhoods in Dallas, Lower Greenville is now a fun spot for going out because of its many restaurants and bars. Whatever you do, don’t miss the fabulous street art throughout the neighborhood-it’s part of the 42 Murals project to beautify the area and preserve its unique character. Then choose from Lebanese tapas, Tex-Mex specialties, or some of the city’s best BBQ, and hit up any of the great bars in Deep Ellum. Maybe you can learn a little something from my misadventure. Some of the unexpected sodas at Rocket Fizzĭuring your weekend in Dallas, stop by Rocket Fizz to sample some truly unusual sodas and find candy you haven’t seen since childhood. I hope you enjoy them and have a better time here than I did. I've uploaded some pictures from the best areas of the park that I saw. This park probably has more to offer than what I witnessed, but my trip to it was uneventful, uninspiring, a bit dangerous, and it's not the most beautiful park in the world, or even Dallas for that matter. Other than her, there was nobody else in sight. I walked along the street until I was finally able to see a better, clearer entrance that took me down to the Turtle Creek Parkway path.Īlong the path I witnessed some wildlife in the form of various ducks and birds. I did finally pop out of the woods onto some road that I suppose had to be Bowen Street. This was a dumb idea and not something I recommend. However, then it dead-ended into some woods that I decided to walk through despite the heavy underbrush. What a mess! Eventually I made it down to what looked like a park and I began working in the short cut grass. There's no easy way and all I see is people running, jogging, walking, bicycling, and lots and lots of construction. Once on the Trail I see something resembling a park, but I have no idea how to get there. Then, I walked down to Snider's Union plaza which just so happened to be on what was called the Katy Trail, a popular jogging and biking path in downtown Dallas. Luckily, I was able to grab a parking space on this small side street for FREE. Becoming frustrated, I drove over Lemmon Avenue heading east then turned right on Carlisle Street and then turned right again onto Carlisle Place. I also couldn't figure out where to park as there didn't appear to be any lots for either park. ![]() ![]() I had wanted to check out Robert E Lee Park and Turtle Creek Park while I was in Dallas, but when I got to the area I got confused and couldn't tell where one park began and the other one ended. Note, all the hedges have white and red flowers at the bases. Great area, very green, peaceful, beautiful. She told us Jerry Jones house was at the end of the creek, owner of a sports team apparently. One reviewer said what to do? take pix of yourself with the bears, walk along the trail, sit on one of the many benches and contemplate life, feed a squirrel, and yes, I would throw a blanket on the ground and have cheese and wine if it wasn't raining. We drove to Versailles Park, saw the gazebo and little else, as the water was sheeting down. However the rain started to really come down. I don't melt so I was going to walk a bit. The difference between Tx rain and Phoenix rain.the drops are closer together in Texas. She told us about Versailles Park, also called Flippen Park I think. She remarked she was listening to the radio. I laughed and asked if Texans have it that down pat. She said it was going to rain in 20 minutes. Very large lily pads, flowers all closed. She said whenever anyone visits, people always bring them down to see the bears, made out of Tx granite. ![]() Told us what it was called, told us how to get to the teddy bears across the bridge. There was a woman walking by, we all said hi and she stopped to talk. With a photographer's camera, people usually stop and talk. ![]()

Mare of easttown season 1 episode 71/22/2024 ![]() Fortunately, the Chief turns up to give her her preferred method of dealing with her problems - putting her back on the case of Erin's death, since the Wayne Potts situation appears to have no direct connection to her death. Mare's clearly shaken up by what happened, even while multiple people over the course of this episode thank her for her bravery and apologize for their past treatment of her. But it lands so well that its cockiness is forgiven.By the way, the only thing sadder than the rough and raw manner of Colin's death is the fact that Evan Peters is no longer with us, which is a damn shame, given how much verve he brought to the show. Perhaps you're like me and thought that the final twist was a little like a gymnastics team who already attained a perfect score going up for one more round on the balancing beam. Really one can't have too many complaints with a story as well realized and as well wrapped as this. Jean Smart and Evan Peters shine even with Kate Winslet's titular role as a disenchanted former High School basketball star turned lead detective stealing most of the scenes in which she is involved. Outside of its excellent pacing exist its handful of excellent performances that further sell the premise and Easttown as a whole. Mare is a breath of fresh air in that regard, using all seven episodes to their full potential without sacrificing quality in the form of torrents of red herrings and tone-deaf investigations. Too often have season-long cop dramas mismanaged their time and required their characters to be myopic, stupid or plain bad police as a means to fill out a full ten-episode order. If you haven't been an admirer before, this show is most certainly going to sway your perception. And indeed it is the seasoned and experienced Kate Winslet's ride all the way. "Mare Of Easttown" is an ode to all the women toughing it out in a rugged, still patriarchal world. Sosie Bacon as the mother of Mare's grandson has some strong moments. The ensemble including Angourie Rice, Evan Peters, Jean Smart and Julianne Nicholson bring the adequate depth to Mare's world – so does Guy Pearce. With a million entities orbiting her – a nosy and still protective mother, a distant daughter, the ghost of a dead son, an estranged husband and so much more, she marches on, holding on to the one thing that seems to keep her in the light her responsibility as a police detective. But Kate Winslet is to watch out for in this layered role. ![]() To be honest, the generous sprinkling of characters of various ages, histories and baggage in such a plot seems a deliberate ploy to add mystery to the viewer's mind – especially when some of those characters don't really have a key role to play in the goings on. So who's up to these gruesome acts? Is it a serial killer or just some pervert on the loose? On the side, a relatively unknown stranger in town (Guy Pearce) takes a romantic interest in Mare, who also relents in an attempt to raise herself from rock bottom. The skeptical police chief feels the pressure from his bosses and has to call in a young, county detective (Evan Peters) to assist Mare with the murder. There's a strange warmth and comfort in the background, as the protagonist deals with her demons whilst trying to crawl out from a dark place she has slid into.Īlready dogged by an unsolved case of a missing girl – the daughter of a childhood friend, Mare finds herself in a situation where a young mother is murdered brutally. Written by Brad Ingelsby and directed by Craig Zobel, the plot may seem like a mix of the McConaughey-Harrelson season of "True Detective" and "Big Little Lies"– maybe not so intense as the former, but surely dark at some points.īut that's the interesting thing about "Mare Of Easttown" – it revolves around this generally laid back town where everyone seems to know each other, and Mare Sheehan (Kate Winslet) a weathered detective and divorced grandmother who seems to be running away and hiding from the weight of expectations that the town and her family has of her. ![]() Disclaimer: this perspective and opinion comes from someone who has been a Kate Winslet fan (and crushed on her) since he first saw the 1997 James Cameron epic "Titanic". ![]() |
